翻譯時如能采用“拿來主義”的即采用“拿來主義”，不必另起爐灶，尤其是單詞、詞組和句子層面。 比如，翻譯“石頭剪子布”就可以直接將英語中對應的詞找出，直接套用英語中的rock- paper-scissors；“口水戰”可套用英語中的a war of words；游戲“打水漂”可套用英語中的詞組play ducks and drakes；“傻人有傻福”可套譯為Fortune favors fools；“謀事在人，成事在天”可套譯為Man proposes, God disposes；從交際角度而言“人非圣賢，孰能無過”可視具體情況套用蒲柏(Alexander Pope，1688-1744) 的To err is human或Even Homer sometimes nods；翻譯“喊破嗓子，不如甩開膀子”時孫寧巧妙地套用了英語中的“Talking the talk is not as good as walking the walk”。當然，套譯不限于native speakers的表達，母語非英語的人翻譯的經典最好也能夠信手拈來：如將“救死扶傷”譯作heal the wounded and save the dying、“吃一塹，長一智”套譯作“A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit”等。我參加第十四屆韓素音翻譯競賽，很多表述，如解放區the Liberated Area等的翻譯都參考了毛澤東選集英文版中的譯法。漢譯英亦如此。如，“精明但不聰明”或“撿起芝麻，丟掉西瓜”可套用英語中的penny wise but pound foolish；“上行，下效。存乎中，行于外”套譯作As above, so below; as within, so without；“積思成言、積言成行、積行成習、積習成性”可套用2012年上映的《鐵娘子》(The Iron Lady)中的一段話 “Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become your habits. Watch your habits, for they become your character.” 注意“直接套用”不迷信專家、不迷信詞典;
